Erythronium revolutum 'Knightshayes Pink' Twelve Nunns

Erythronium revolutum ‘Knightshayes Pink’  is a bulbous perennial which grows up to 35cm in height.  A native of Western North America, it originated in the National Trust’s lovely woodland garden near Tiverton in Devon. A form or hybrid of Erythronium revolutum, the ‘Knighthayes’ strain is a particularly striking one, with its flowers a beautiful pink shade and superb mottled leaves in green and maroon. The flowers will self-seed when happy, building up a little colony year after year where left undisturbed.

Erythronium revolutum ‘Knightshayes Pink’  flowers in April. Their leaves die back in June and the bulbs become dormant over the summer. The best time to buy and plant Erythronium bulbs is in July/August/September, because they will root down in the autumn while the soil is still warm.  The attractive glossy leaves start to emerge towards the end of February. 

Please note:  We send these to you as dormant, freshly lifted, flowering size bulbs from July through to September  ready for potting up or planting directly into the garden. 

The species and cultivars of  Erythronium that we offer are all selected because they are good garden plants.  They grow well in dappled shade and the bulbs should be kept damp and not dried out. 

Our collection has taken many years to develop. It takes at least 5 years to grow a flowering sized bulb from seed and propagation by division is slow.

Helleborus foetidus (Stinking Hellebore) (9cm pot)

Helleborus foetidus

Helleborus foetidus (Stinking Hellebore) is an evergreen perennial which grows up to 60cm with erect stems and striking lime green clusters of flowers and dissected evergreen foliage.

Also known as an English Hellebore, it is described by the RHS as follows:-

‘Nodding, usually purple-edged, pale green flowers up to 2cm in width are borne in large open clusters from late winter. It has  erect stems, and leaves palmately divided with narrow dark green leaflets. Its other common names include:

stinking hellebore , barfoot, bearfoot, bear’s foot, foetid hellebore, ox heel, setterwort, stinkwort’

Helleborus x sternii (Mediterranean Hellebore) (9cm pot)

Helleborus x sternii

Helleborus x sternii (Mediterranean Hellebore) is a  hybrid between H. lividus and H. argutifolius. It has creamy-green flowers tinged with pinkish-purple, with stems and a back leaf colour similar to H. lividus  but is hardy and more vigorous like H. argutifolius. 

It is described by the RHS as follows:- 

‘H. x sternii is an evergreen perennial, to 35cm, with purple, biennial stems bearing leaves with three green, pale-veined leaflets. Nodding, creamy-green flowers, suffused with pinkish-purple and 3-5cm in width, are borne in open clusters from late winter to mid-spring.’

Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican Hellebore) (9cm pot)

Helleborus argutifolius

Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican Hellebore) is an excellent garden plant which grows up to 1m producing striking lime green clusters of flowers and dissected evergreen foliage.  

It is described by the RHS as follows:- 

‘H. argutifolius is an evergreen perennial to 1m with stout stems bearing leaves composed of three spiny-toothed dark green leaflets. Bowl-shaped, nodding, pale green flowers 4-5cm in width are borne in large open clusters.’

Helleborus niger Christmas Rose ‘Harvington hybrids’ has been selected by Hugh Nunn and is just one variety of Harvington Hellebores® grown by Twelve Nunns. It has beautiful large, outward facing white flowers with golden stamens.

Trillium erectum album ‘Harvington Clone’

Trillium erectum album ‘Harvington Clone’ is one of our own trilliums.  Originating from Eastern USA it produces clear white flowers with black eyes that are held on an upright pedicel, making the flower clearly visible above its foliage.  It flowers during April/May and can grow between 20-40 cm high, forming strong clumps. 

We offer our full range of Trilliums for despatch in the dormant season which is from mid July until November. They are sent as freshly lifted, healthy Trillium rhizomes with live roots in moist packing material.  Our rhizomes are at least 4 years old.  Given the right situation and soil they should flower after 1 year of planting.

Trillium chloropetalum (9cm pot)

Trillium chloropetalum has upright maroon-red flowers which are borne directly upon its beautifully mottled leaves – these will continue to look good long after the flowers are over.  The species is a Californian native and grows to a height of up to 35 cm. It flowers through April and May, and forms strong clumps given time, and is a very persistent grower – in our experience 25 years in one position is not uncommon.   

We offer our full range of Trilliums for despatch in the dormant season which is from the end of July until November.
