Pre-orders

Many of our plants have a season for despatch and are therefore not available all year round.  So we thought it would be useful to be able to ‘pre-order’ the plants you would like at the time you are thinking about them.   These include: –

Roscoea tubers

Erythronium bulbs

Trillium rhizomes

Hellebore Plug Plants

How to Place a Pre-order

Add the plants you would like to the basket then proceed to the checkout in the normal way.  Payment for pre-orders is not needed at the point of ordering but on the ‘release date’ of your plants – in other words you pay when the plants are ready for despatch.  On the release date you will receive an email with a click through for payment via credit/debit card or PayPal.  Once payment has been received, your plants will be despatched within 14 days.

You will then receive 2 further emails, 1 confirming your pre-order,  and another when your order has been despatched.

Please note – different groups of plants are ready to send at different times of the year

Please also note that pre-orders cannot be added to a basket containing plants that are available for despatch now e.g. a product such as  a Hellebore Pot Plant that is available now has to be ordered separately.

So if, for example, you would like several different Hellebore Plug Plants then these can all be added to the same pre-order, but if you’d like some Erythronium bulbs as well then you will need to raise a separate pre-order for these.  This is because we send Plug plants from mid-April to early June, and Erythronium bulbs from mid June to mid September so we are unable to send them in the same box.

We look forward to receiving your pre-order!

Trillium

We offer freshly lifted, healthy Trillium rhizomes with live roots that will transplant easily.  They will be available to buy again in the summer ready for the despatch season in August-November.

Please note our availability list below – some are in plentiful supply others are available in small numbers.

Roscoea

We despatch Roscoea tubers during March and April while dormant. They are sold as large flowering-sized tubers ready for planting out.  They will be available to pre-order from mid January 2024. Please use our Contacts page for any order enquiries outside of this period.

Roscoea are robust herbaceous perennials in the ginger family.  They are suitable for the front of borders, in a rock garden or grown in a container.  With orchid-like flowers in the summer they can be found in colours ranging from white and cream through pinks, brick reds and purples.  They have tuberous, fleshy roots (similar in appearance to dahlia) that become dormant in late autumn.  New shoots appear from April onwards.   Early varieties such as R. cautleyoides flower in May, most flower in June but the later varieties such as R. ‘Summer Deep Purple’, R. ‘Harvington Imperial’ and R. ‘Wisley Amethyst’ flower in July and R. ‘Red Gurkha’ flowers in August and even into early September.  They are hardy throughout the British Isles.

Our selection of Roscoea includes five with the prefix ‘Harvington’:

R. ‘Harvington Royale’

R. ‘Harvington Raw Silk’

‘R. ‘Harvington Evening Star’

R. ‘Harvington Imperial’

R. ‘Harvington Summer Deep Purple’

These are a set of distinctive plants bred by Hugh Nunn in the village of Harvington in the Vale of Evesham and selected for their beauty, vigour and garden worthiness.  Several have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in recognition of these characteristics.

Erythronium

The best time to buy and plant Erythronium bulbs is in July/August/September, because they will root down in the autumn while the soil is still warm. We send these to you as dormant, freshly lifted, flowering size bulbs from July through to September  ready for potting up or planting directly into the garden.

If you would like us to contact you at the right time for ordering Erythronium bulbs, please email penny@twelvenunns.co.uk

Our collection of Erythronium has taken many years to develop. It takes at least 5 years to grow a flowering sized bulb from seed and propagation by division is slow. The species and cultivars of Erythronium that we offer are all selected because they are good garden plants.

Three new Erythronium hendersonii x oregonum were released in 2023 by Twelve Nunns Nursery:-

‘Harvington Elizabeth’
Erythronium Harvington Imogen
‘Harvington Imogen’
Erythronium Harvington Lilli
‘Harvington Lilli’

The new Harvington Erythronium have taken more than 20 years to develop. Named after family members, selection has been based on the strength of pencil marking in the flowers, along with the anther and stem colour, and the foliage form with its striking mottling.

Gardens Illustrated Magazine introduced all three in its April 2023 edition, with an article entitled ‘Natural Selection‘.

‘the breeding programme at Twelve Nunns Nursery spans two generations and has taken more than 20 years of careful, meticulous selection to create a new trio of Harvington Erythronium.’ (Alys Fowler APRIL 2023 www.gardensillustrated.com)
