Arisaema candidissimum is a superb architectural perennial garden plant which grows from a corm and is one of the finest and most vigorous Arisaemas. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Award of Garden Merit.
The flowers or inflorescences are very striking with white hooded spathes striped pale pink. As the flowers mature the foliage grows into impressive large glossy like leaves (like those of the cheese plant). The plants in full leaf, reach between 30 and 50 cm and the flowers vary from 10 to 15 cm.
These plants emerge late in early June and die back after the first frost in autumn. Because they remain dormant over the winter and through much of the spring it is worth marking where you plant them in the garden, so you don’t forget where they are! When planted in the garden they are hardy, but when in pots they do need to be protected from frost or lifted and stored frost free over the winter.
These suit dappled shade but will also thrive in sunnier conditions as long as they don’t dry out in the summer months, as they prefer moist, well-drained soil.

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Harvington Single Yellow Gold Nectaries’ has been selected by Hugh Nunn and is just one variety of Harvington Hellebores® grown by Twelve Nunns. Harvington Hellebores® are excellent, easy to grow garden plants and flower at that time of year when there may be little or no other floral colour. They are winter flowering, frost hardy perennials, that reliably come back year after year, flowering from December through to the end of March. Their dark green, glossy, evergreen foliage also provides year-round interest.
Hellebores look particularly attractive against planting companions such as snowdrops, aconites and early daffodils. They create a perfect ground cover for areas of dappled shade, such as borders under deciduous trees and shrubs, but will also thrive in patio pots.
Upon receiving your Harvington Hellebores® plugs, please allow some light and air into your plants immediately and keep them in a cool light place. Ensure that the plug plants are always kept moist and plant them as soon as possible after receiving them. If possible, plant each plug in a 1 or 2 litre sized deep pot or container for this growing season so that they establish well before planting them out. Once they have rooted down into the pots, they will be ready to plant into the garden or into a larger pot or container in the autumn or following spring.

Our website is encrypted using SSL – this ensures all data moving between you and the website remains private. A firewall protects the website against a number of common web-based attacks as well as a large amount of attacks specifically targeted at the technology we use to run the website. We also block brute-force attacks that attempt to guess user passwords in order to gain access. To help prevent these sort of attacks all user accounts are required to have strong passwords, and we periodically review and if necessary reset passwords that are deemed to pose a security risk.
What data breach procedures we have in place
In the event of data being accessed by unauthorised parties, we will disclose information to affected users with details of the steps we’ve taken to address the issue, and measures to mitigate possible adverse effects. We will disclose details as soon as possible once we become aware of any data breach.
The rhizomes you receive from Twelve Nunns will be large enough to flower within the next year or two and will have a number of living roots attached to them. These must be preserved at all costs. Without them the rhizome will take 2-3 years to establish an adequate new root system. So, when planting, dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots as they would be in a natural state.
Once the planting location has been decided, the next step is to think about planting depth. Were you to go to N. America to examine Trillium rhizomes in the wild, you would find that most of them are situated just below the leaf litter layer. This gives a crucial clue as to the depth of planting. 1-2” below soil surface is usually optimum. If a T. rhizome finds itself too high in the soil it has the incredible ability to drag itself deeper by means of contractile roots.
Where to plant
Nearly all Trilliums naturally grow in woodland conditions, and will therefore be used to some level of decayed organic matter in the soil. When locating your Trillium planting position, choose some shade or at least a position that isn’t in full sun in the summer.
Compost and feed
Mix some well decayed organic material in with the soil when planting. This can be garden compost, leaf mould or even really well rotted manure.
In our experience, Trilliums are quite hungry plants and good feeding results in better growth and flowering. Please bear in mind that through autumn, winter and spring the plants must have enough moisture at the roots, but bad drainage is to be avoided. In most of N. America they are used to dry conditions during the heat of summer.
If you are growing west coast Trilliums such as T. albidum, T. kurabayashii and T. chloropetalum the addition of sharp sand to the compost will be beneficial. Aim at 20-25% sharp sand which can be obtained from most reputable garden stores. Failing that we have found sharp sand from a builders’ merchant works just as well.
Please keep the tubers moist at all times and plant them as soon as possible after receiving them. They are quite brittle so handle them carefully to avoid breaking off any roots.
Where a pot or container is to be used, use free draining multi-purpose compost. Put a handful of compost at the bottom of the pot and place the tuber into position making sure that the crown of the plant is at least 10-15cm from the surface. Add several more handfuls of compost on the top and then tap the pot firmly on a surface. This shakes the compost in and around the tuber and prevents air pockets. The soil contact will also bring moisture and nutrients for the tuber to grow.
Water well after planting and as the plant establishes. Ensure that they don’t suffer from drought in the summer or waterlogging in the winter.
If planting in the garden, Roscoea are frost hardy in the garden when planted at the right depth. Plant the crown of the tuber at least 10-15cm below the surface of the soil, using the same principles as when planting in a pot.
Where to plant
Roscoeagrow well in dappled shade. They grow in any moist, free draining soil. Their tuberous, fleshy roots (similar in appearance to dahlia) become dormant in late autumn through to spring. Strap shaped leaves appear from April onwards – some come up as late as June in the case ofRoscoea ‘Red Gurkha’. It is worth marking their planting position with a cane or label so that they don’t get overlooked when forking over your flower border! Some frost protection is recommended during severe weather.
Occasional problems
Roscoea do not like drying out when in full leaf and flower. Ensure they are well watered during dry, sunny spells as well as keeping them shaded.
I ordered two hellebores on Monday and they arrived today! I was astonished, and very happy. Such healthy little plants, one even complete with a flower, and I love your packing system. The fleece and stockings have gone in the compost heap, the cardboard will be recycled, and the two hellebores were planted immediately in prime positions (they were chosen specifically for these sites) where I can admire them daily.
