Planting your Trillium Rhizomes

How to plant

The rhizomes you receive from Twelve Nunns will be large enough to flower within the next year or two and will have a number of living roots attached to them.  These must be preserved at all costs.  Without them the rhizome will take 2-3 years to establish an adequate new root system.  So, when planting, dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots as they would be in a natural state.

Once the planting location has been decided, the next step is to think about planting depth.  Were you to go to N. America to examine Trillium rhizomes in the wild, you would find that most of them are situated just below the leaf litter layer.  This gives a crucial clue as to the depth of planting.  1-2” below soil surface is usually optimum.  If a T. rhizome finds itself too high in the soil it has the incredible ability to drag itself deeper by means of contractile roots.

Where to plant

Nearly all Trilliums naturally grow in woodland conditions, and will therefore be used to some level of decayed organic matter in the soil.  When locating your Trillium planting position, choose some shade or at least a position that isn’t in full sun in the summer.

Compost and feed

Mix some well decayed organic material in with the soil when planting.  This can be garden compost, leaf mould or even really well rotted manure.

In our experience, Trilliums are quite hungry plants and good feeding results in better growth and flowering.  Please bear in mind that through autumn, winter and spring the plants must have enough moisture at the roots, but bad drainage is to be avoided.  In most of N. America they are used to dry conditions during the heat of summer.

If you are growing west coast Trilliums such as T. albidum, T. kurabayashii and T. chloropetalum the addition of sharp sand to the compost will be beneficial.  Aim at 20-25% sharp sand which can be obtained from most reputable garden stores.  Failing that we have found sharp sand from a builders’ merchant works just as well.

Planting your Roscoea Tubers

How to plant

Please keep the tubers moist at all times and plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.  They are quite brittle so handle them carefully to avoid breaking off any roots.

Where a pot or container is to be used, use free draining multi-purpose compost.  Put a handful of compost at the bottom of the pot and place the tuber into position making sure that the crown of the plant is at least 10-15cm from the surface.  Add several more handfuls of compost on the top and then tap the pot firmly on a surface. This shakes the compost in and around the tuber and prevents air pockets. The soil contact will also bring moisture and nutrients for the tuber to grow.

Water well after planting and as the plant establishes.  Ensure that they don’t suffer from drought in the summer or waterlogging in the winter.

If planting in the garden, Roscoea are frost hardy in the garden when planted at the right depth.  Plant the crown of the tuber at least 10-15cm below the surface of the soil, using the same principles as when planting in a pot.

Where to plant

Roscoeagrow well in dappled shade. They grow in any moist, free draining soil. Their tuberous, fleshy roots (similar in appearance to dahlia) become dormant in late autumn through to spring.  Strap shaped leaves appear from April onwards – some come up as late as June in the case ofRoscoea ‘Red Gurkha’.  It is worth marking their planting position with a cane or label so that they don’t get overlooked when forking over your flower border! Some frost protection is recommended during severe weather.

Occasional problems

Roscoea do not like drying out when in full leaf and flower. Ensure they are well watered during dry, sunny spells as well as keeping them shaded.

Planting your Harvington Hellebores® Plug Plants

How to plant

Please allow some light and air into your plants immediately and keep them in a cool light place.  Ensure that the plug plants are kept moist at all times and plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.

Plant each plug in a 1 or 2 litre sized deep pot or container for this growing season so that they establish well before planting them out. Position the plug so that the bottom of the stem is at the top of the pot (see illustration for details). Keep them in cool semi-shade – don’t put them in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Once they have rooted down into the pots they will be ready to plant into the garden in the autumn or spring.  Prepare the soil well: dig over an area, add some compost or well-rotted manure and then plant them. Take care not to damage the roots and gently firm the soil around the plant. Keep the area around them weed free.

Always water your plants in when you plant them either in a pot or in the garden.  Remember hellebores are hardy plants and so they should be kept outside.

Where to plant

Hellebores thrive in dappled shade in soil that is well cultivated, fertile and always moist during the main growing period.

Compost and feed

Hellebores are hungry plants. Use a general purpose, free draining compost or well-rotted manure when planting. The main growing periods are during the Spring and Autumn so use a liquid feed every 2 – 3 weeks during April and May, and again in September. As Autumn approaches, top dressing them around the root zone with some bone meal is advisable but avoid putting this near the crown of the plant. A general-purpose fertilizer can then be applied in late winter.

Leaves

Hellebore leaves are ‘evergreen’ but do eventually look past their best, usually in late Winter. They can then be cut off and new growth will take place.  It is important to keep the crown of the plant open by cutting back any dead foliage and avoiding any build-up of soil or leaf litter. We do advise however leaving the leaves on as long as they look green and healthy.

Occasional problems

Black Spot:  Hellebores sometime suffer from fungal disease which causes black patches on their leaves. The easiest way to prevent this or treat if already present is to spray with a fungicide like Liquid Copper or something like Roseclear at the same time as you treat your roses.

Aphids:  Sometimes aphids enjoy feeding on Hellebores. Use an appropriate control spray from your local garden centre or hardware store to prevent an infestation.

Please note:  Hellebores can cause skin irritation and are harmful if eaten

Erythronium Bulbs Planting Advice

Planting your Erythronium Bulbs

The bulbs you receive should be planted as soon as you are able to and kept moist at all times.  Most will flower during the Spring following planting, the odd one may take a year longer.

Most Erythronium bulbs have an obvious tip which may still have the leaf sheath attached and this is the top of the bulb. The base is rounded, and often creamy-white and smooth. Please be aware that roots often appear on the side of the bulb rather than from the bottom.

How to plant

Plant each bulb to a depth that is at least double the bulb’s length, making a hole that is twice the length of the bulb, and placing it at the bottom.  Try and ensure it is kept upright whilst covering with soil

Planting in Pots

Use well drained compost with plenty of organic matter.  Potting compost with some grit, perlite or bark added to open up the compost works well.

Plant in deep pots if possible – the bulbs, once planted, will work their way deeper in time. Keep the compost damp and roots will develop in late summer / autumn and leaves appear from early March onwards. Protect from slugs and keep in a cool shady place.  Protect from frost with fleece or similar.

Planting in open garden

Erythronium in the wild often grow where it is cool with light dappled shade. Prepare soil well with added organic matter.  Old compost or leaf mould is ideal as an additive. Apply surface mulch of organic material and protect from slugs from late February onwards.

Erythronium ‘Harvington Hybrid’ (revolutum x howellii) X

Erythronium 'Harvington Hybrid' (revolutum x howellii) Twelve Nunns

Please note: We send these to you as dormant, freshly lifted, flowering size bulbs in July and August ready for potting up or planting directly into the garden.

The species and cultivars of Erythronium that we offer are all selected because they are good garden plants.  They grow well in dappled shade.  They must remain moist at all times.

They flower from late March through April. Their leaves die back in June and the bulbs become dormant over the summer. This is the best time to buy and plant Erythronium bulbs because they will root down in the autumn while the soil is still warm.  The attractive glossy leaves start to emerge towards the end of February.

Our collection has taken many years to develop. It takes at least 5 years to grow a flowering sized bulb from seed and propagation by division is slow.
