Helleborus x hybridus ‘Harvington Single White Speckled’ (Plug)

helleborus-hybridus-harvington-single-white-speckled

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Harvington Single White Speckled’ has been selected by Hugh Nunn and is just one variety of Harvington Hellebores® grown by Twelve Nunns. Harvington Hellebores® are excellent, easy to grow garden plants and flower at that time of year when there may be little or no other floral colour. They are winter flowering, frost hardy perennials, that reliably come back year after year, flowering from December through to the end of March. Their dark green, glossy, evergreen foliage also provides year-round interest.

Hellebores look particularly attractive against planting companions such as snowdrops, aconites and early daffodils. They create a perfect ground cover for areas of dappled shade, such as borders under deciduous trees and shrubs, but will also thrive in patio pots.

Upon receiving your Harvington Hellebores® plugs, please allow some light and air into your plants immediately and keep them in a cool light place.  Ensure that the plug plants are kept moist at all times and plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.  If possible, plant each plug in a 1 or 2 litre sized deep pot or container for this growing season so that they establish well before planting them out. Once they have rooted down into the pots they will be ready to plant into the garden or into containers in the autumn or following spring.

Erythronium tuolumnense ‘Spindlestone’ X

Erythronium 'Spindlestone' Twelve Nunns

Erythronium tuolumnense ‘Spindlestone’ is a bulbous perennial which grows up to 30cm in height. It is a selected form of Erythronium tuolumnense with a neat habit and dependable flowering in March and April. Its paired leaves are held distinctively and are a bright apple green in colour.  It is a good, clump forming Erythronium with bright, pure yellow flowers.

Erythronium tuolumnense ‘Spindlestone’ flower from late March through April.Their leaves die back in June and the bulbs become dormant over the summer. The best time to buy and plant Erythronium bulbs is in July/August/September, because they will root down in the autumn while the soil is still warm.  The attractive glossy leaves start to emerge towards the end of February.

Please note:  We send these to you as dormant, freshly lifted, flowering size bulbs from July through to September  ready for potting up or planting directly into the garden.

The species and cultivars of  Erythronium that we offer are all selected because they are good garden plants.  They grow well in dappled shade and the bulbs should be kept damp and not dried out.

Our collection has taken many years to develop. It takes at least 5 years to grow a flowering sized bulb from seed and propagation by division is slow.

For Erythronium tuolumnense ‘Spindlestone’ planting advice see our Erythronium Planting Advice page

Our Erythronium range has been reviewed in The Telegraph and provides further information and advise which is well worth reading:-

Format of Plant Material

We sell plant material in a variety of forms depending on the species, time of year and ease of packaging.

Bulbs

Erythronium bulbs are despatched when they are dormant in mid to late summer. They are easily damaged in transit or during planting if they are in full leaf. We sell them at the best time for you to plant them either in pots or directly in the garden.

Rhizomes and Tubers

Roscoea and Trillium are sent to you bare-rooted when they are virtually dormant. Rhizomes and tubers are underground thickened stem for storing the plants energy.

In the case of Roscoea which are in the ginger family of plants, they have a small rhizome with fleshy, thick, tuberous roots attached similar in appearance to dahlia tubers.

We send both Roscoea and Trillium rhizomes to you with plenty of roots on at the right time to plant them directly into your garden or to pot them up.  The roots are crucial to their successful establishment.

Hellebore seeds must be sown as fresh as possible.  We therefore send them to you soon after collection.

Plug Plants

Our Hellebore plugs are young vigorous seedling plants that are despatched to you just as their roots are ready to grow down into a bigger pot.  They need potting up as soon as possible after you receive them.

Plants grown in pots are ready for planting directly out into your garden.  They can be planted out at almost any time of year as long as they are kept watered in the summer during establishment.

Packaging

Our packaging is nearly all compostable so simply receive your plants, plant them and then walk to your compost bin and smile! You won’t have a heap of packaging for the dustbin lorry to pick up, just some extra food to keep the worms happy 🙂

Despatch Periods for Plant Material

We despatch plant material at the best time of year (in our experience) to ensure you receive it fresh and get the best results. This results in 4-6 week despatch periods for each group of plants, seeds, bulbs or rhizomes. We take orders in advance and during the despatch periods.

There may be some minor adjustments to the despatch periods given below because of seasonal variations.

Roscoea tubers:
March and April as bare root tubers, as potted plants at other times of the year.

Harvington Hellebore® Plug Plants:
Mid-April, through May and June

Harvington Hellebore® Seeds:
During July

Erythronium bulbs:
From July through August and September

Trillium rhizomes:
From September through to early November

Pot Plants

We aim to send out pot plants within 2 weeks of ordering.  The exception to this is during the month of August.  Orders received during August will be sent during the first week of September.

Pre-orders

If you would like to order our plants outside of the despatch periods listed above we now use a pre-order system.

How to Place a Pre-order

Add the plants you would like to the basket then proceed to the checkout in the normal way.  Payment for pre-orders is needed at the point of ordering, however your plants will then be despatched to you within 14 days after the ‘release date’, e.g.  after 24th March 2023 for Harvington Hellebore® Plug Plants.

You will receive 2 emails, 1 confirming your pre-order,  and another when your order has been despatched.

Different groups of plants are ready to send at different times of the year and therefore will have different release dates. Please  therefore note the following when pre-ordering:-

  • Pre-orders cannot be added to a basket containing plants that are available for despatch now e.g. a product such as  a Hellebore Pot Plant that is available now has to be ordered separately.
  • Pre-orders with different release dates cannot be added to the same basket e.g. Harvington Hellebore® Plug Plants (release date 24 April 2023) and Roscoea tubers (release date  6 March 2023) would need to be ordered separately.  So if, for example, you would like several different Hellebore Plug Plants then these can all be added to the same pre-order, but if you’d like some Roscoea tubers as well then you will need to raise a separate pre-order for these.  This is because we send Plug plants from mid-April to early June, and Roscoea tubers  from March.

We look forward to receiving your pre-orders!
