The Roscoea bred by Hugh and Penny have all been selected for their distinct colouration as well as good growing characteristics.

Our selection of Roscoea includes several have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in recognition of their beauty, vigour and garden worthiness.

Roscoea are robust, herbaceous perennials in the ginger family.  They are suitable for the front of borders, in a rock garden or grown in a container.  With orchid-like flowers in the summer they can be found in colours ranging from white and cream through pinks, brick reds and purples.  They have tuberous, fleshy roots (similar in appearance to dahlia) that become dormant in late autumn, with strap shaped leaves from April onwards.  Some appearing above ground as late as June in the case of Roscoea ‘Red Gurkha’.  They are hardy throughout the British Isles.

Roscoea grow well in light, dappled shade.  They grow in any moist, free draining soil.  They are frost hardy in the garden when planted at the right depth (10-15cm below surface).  They can also be grown successfully in pots and containers where some frost protection is recommended during severe frosts.

We send out flowering-sized tubers (similar to dahlia). Water well after planting and as the plant establishes.  Ensure that they don’t suffer from drought in the summer or waterlogging in the winter.

Helleborus niger Christmas Rose (9cm pot)

Helleborus niger Christmas Rose 'Harvington hybrids'

Helleborus niger Christmas Rose has beautiful  outward facing white flowers with golden stamens.

They are winter flowering, frost hardy perennials, that reliably come back year after year, flowering from December through to the end of March. Their dark green, glossy, evergreen foliage also provides year-round interest.

Hellebores look particularly attractive against planting companions such as snowdrops, aconites and early daffodils. They create a perfect ground cover for areas of dappled shade, such as borders under deciduous trees and shrubs, but will also thrive in patio pots.

They are established plants ready for planting out in the garden or into a larger pot.

Twelve Nunns Green Credentials

We are constantly reviewing what we can do to improve Twelve Nunns Green Credentials, working to help save our environment as well as your pennies! We are proud of what we have achieved so far.

Twelve Nunns Green Credentials

Packaging – those of you whom have bought from us before will be aware that the packaging we use is all recyclable – right down to the the gummed, compostable paper tape we use to seal our boxes (no need to strip off any vinyl tape before recycling or composting). Our packaging solutions are as a result of a continual evolution of ideas.

Saving compost – a 9cm pot only uses 0.5 litres of compost. Compare this to the 2 litres of compost if you buy a plant at a garden centre in a 2 litre pot. And our freshly lifted bare rooted bulbs only require a handful of coir to protect them during transit – this all helps save our precious natural resources. And of course this really helps you save your pennies!

The plants we send to you from Twelve Nunns are either in small pots or are supplied as freshly lifted bare root rhizomes, bulbs and tubers. We breed, propagate and grow all of the plants and bulbs here on our Lincolnshire nursery.

Saving plastic – smaller pots mean less plastic. We are working on removing plastic completely from our deliveries, in terms of both pots and labels. We are planning to replace our labels with a fully recyclable paper based product.

Twelve Nunns Green Credentials

We are also very excited about a product we have discovered recently called a wool pot that is produced in the UK. Along with a wool based topping, these provide exactly the type of protective packaging the plants need to ensure they reach you in tip top condition. They can be recycled and are compostable. We work in a village surrounded by sheep farmers, so making use of a bi-product that is often wasted or undervalued seems a good idea to us.

Saving fuel (so less air pollution) – lighter, smaller boxes that weigh less mean less fuel is needed to transport them.

We passionately believe that all these savings are crucially needed for the future health and stability of our environment. By following our Twelve Nunns Green Credentials we are also helping to support our farming community. By buying our plants you are playing a part in a greener future.

Thank you for the order – in excellent condition. As usual, beautifully packed. If I get as much pleasure from the plants as from the packaging (which I fully expect to do) it will be a great purchase.

Terry, Hereford

Just had to tell you that I purchased some plants from you about 3 or 4 years ago, one of which was Roscoea Harvington Imperial.  It has been flowering for the last 2 months in a 12 inch pot, and is now one of my top plants, and I have had hundreds during my 80 years.  I don’t know if you bred this plant, but what an absolute beauty it is.  Right outside my garden door, first thing I look at each morning to remove any passed blossoms, and it seems to keep producing more without weakening.

Jill, Leatherhead

The hellebores have just been delivered and are currently having a good drink.  I have to write to you to let you know that these 6 plants are in such fantastic condition and were so carefully packed.  I will be shouting to your name out to anyone who I know wants a hellebore or the other plants that you sell.

Planting your Narcissus cyclamineus bulbs

How to plant

The bulbs are at least 3 years old and most should flower in the first year. They are supplied in pots because they must be kept damp – unlike most other daffodils which we traditionally buy as dry bulbs.  These delightful petite daffodils are well rooted in their pot.  There are at least 3 bulbs per pot however when planting do not try to separate them. Dig an appropriate size hole and carefully tap out or cut the pot open and try to keep the compost, bulbs and roots intact while planting.  This will minimise damage to the roots and maximise your success.

Where to plant

They can be planted in a larger pot with other bulbs and plants; in the front of a border or can be planted in ‘thin’ grassland and naturalised – as on the Alpine Meadow and Rock Garden area at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden at Wisley.

When established, bulbs will become clump forming the longer they are in the ground. They grow best in moist, but well drained soil which is slightly acidic.  If they are happy, they will self-seed and are perfect for naturalising, especially in thin grassland. They prefer dappled shade so do avoid a planting position in full sun.
