Roscoea ‘McBeath’s Pink’ AGM

roscoea-mcbeaths-pink

Roscoea ‘McBeath’s Pink’ is an outstanding early Roscoeaflowering in May with bold, orchid-like pink flowers and reddish-purple stems. It is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial. Named after Mr. Ron McBeath the plantsman, it was outstanding in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Roscoea Trial, where it was awarded an Award of Garden Merit

Roscoea are robust, herbaceous perennials in the ginger family.  They are suitable for the front of borders, in a rock garden or grown in a container.  With orchid-like flowers in the summer they can be found in colours ranging from white and cream through pinks, brick reds and purples.  They have tuberous, fleshy roots (similar in appearance to dahlia) that become dormant in late autumn, with strap shaped leaves from April onwards.  Some appearing above ground as late as June in the case of Roscoea ‘Red Gurkha’.  They are hardy throughout the British Isles.

Roscoea grow well in light, dappled shade.  They grow in any moist, free draining soil.  They are frost hardy in the garden when planted at the right depth (10-15cm below surface).  They can also be grown successfully in pots and containers where some frost protection is recommended during severe frosts.

We send out flowering-sized tubers (similar to dahlia) Water well after planting and as the plant establishes.  Ensure that they don’t suffer from drought in the summer or waterlogging in the winter.

To find out more about planting your Roscoea ‘McBeath’s Pink’ tuber please see our Roscoea Planting Advice page.

Our selection of Roscoea includes four with the prefix ‘Harvington‘.  These are a set of distinctive plants bred by Hugh Nunn in the Vale of Evesham and selected for their beauty, vigour and garden worthiness.  Several have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in recognition of these characteristics.

They have also featured in the RHS publication ‘The Garden’ (January 2016).

helleborus-hybridus-harvington-single-pink-speckled

Helleborus x hybridus ‘Harvington Single Pink Speckled’ is just one variety of Harvington Hellebores® grown by Twelve Nunns. Harvington Hellebores® are excellent, easy to grow garden plants and flower at that time of year when there may be little or no other floral colour. They are winter flowering, frost hardy perennials, that reliably come back year after year, flowering from December through to the end of March. Their dark green, glossy, evergreen foliage also provides year-round interest.

Narcissus bulbocodium var.citrinus x 4 pots (12 bulbs)

Narcissus bulbicodium citrinus

Narcissus bulbocodium var.citrinus is a dwarf Narcissus species. A bulbous perennial, it produces lovely funnel shaped pale lemon flowers in early spring will grow up to 15 cm in height, surrounded by its slender, bright green foliage. When established, bulbs will become clump forming the longer they are in the ground. They grow best in moist, but well drained soil in the growing season, which can then be allowed to dry out in the summer months.  If they are happy, they will self-seed and are perfect for naturalising in thin grassland or at the edge of borders, and grow well in both dappled shade or full sun.

Alice Vincent reviewed our ‘exquisitely formed collection’ in The Telegraph (16 October 2021):- https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/how-to-grow/daffodils-new-tulips/

To find out more about planting your bulbs, the advice is the same as for our narcissus cyclamineus bulbs, so please see our narcissus cyclamineus Planting Advice page.

Narcissus bulbocodium var.citrinus are sold to you in pots rather than as loose bulbs, because the bulbs of this daffodil must not dry out. All plants offered are propagated and grown by us here on our specialist nursery based in South Lincolnshire. The bulbs are 3 years old and most will flower in the first spring season after planting and will flower year after year thereafter. We supply at least three flowering sized bulbs per pot. They are available to order from October to March.
