It’s time to cut back your Hellebore flowers
It’s time to cut back your Hellebore flowers. Your Hellebore plants have been flowering since winter and are now going to seed, so it is a good time to tidy them up. The pods are ripening and the seeds will be popping any time now. If you let the seed fall onto the ground you could have many seedlings growing next year. In a wild part of the garden you may want this to happen. However, in the case of Helleborus x hybridus the seedlings will be mixed colours. This is because they will have cross pollinated with other Hellebores in your garden and the new young plants are unlikely to be identical to your original Harvington Hellebore. You may find a new and exciting colour or form but bear in mind the majority will be muted in colour.
We would recommend cutting back the flower heads now to prevent having too many plants that will need thinning or digging out later. You can use the seeding flower stems in flower arrangements.
